Thigh fat may be to blame for older adults who slow down

Feb. 18, 2013 ? A new study from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center shows that an increase in fat throughout the thigh is predictive of mobility loss in otherwise healthy older adults.

Lead author Kristen Beavers, Ph.D., and colleagues at Wake Forest Baptist said the findings suggest that prevention of age-related declines in walking speed isn't just about preserving muscle mass, it's also about preventing fat gain.

Walking speed declines with age, said Beavers, and in older adults slower walking speed is a predictor of disability, nursing home admission and even death. As such, she believes that walking speed represents an important, and potentially modifiable, predictor of independent living for older adults. Unfortunately, said Beavers, not much is known about what precedes this decline, although change in body composition seemed like a reasonable place to start the research. "As people age, they are more likely to gain fat in and around their muscles, and we speculated that gaining fat in the leg muscle itself would be related to slowed walking speed."

The researchers used data from the National Institute on Aging's Health, Aging, and Body Composition (Health ABC) study, a prospective cohort of several thousand initially well-functioning white and black adults aged 70-79. They looked at how changes in fat and lean mass affected walking speed, and were specifically interested in whether changes in thigh intermuscular fat or thigh muscle area were more predictive of slowed walking speed.

A study sample of 2,306 men and women was reviewed, with a mean age of 74.6 years. Walking speed was assessed by measuring the usual time it took participants to complete a 20-minute walk, and they were tested annually over a four-year period. Body composition measures were assessed via computed tomography (CT).

Results, published online ahead of print in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found both increasing thigh intermuscular fat and decreasing thigh muscle area to be significant, independent predictors of walking speed decline. Importantly, said Beavers, older adults who gained the most thigh fat and lost the most thigh muscle were at greatest risk of experiencing a clinically meaningful decline in walking speed.

Beavers said this study is the first of its kind to address the independent association between changes in sophisticated measures of body composition and walking speed. "As the burden of disability becomes increasingly common and expensive, identification of modifiable contributors to functional decline in older adults is emerging as a significant priority of public health research," Beavers said. "Future studies building on these findings should test whether targeted reductions in thigh intermuscular fat, augmentation of thigh muscle area, or both yield improvements in walking speed and prolonged independence for older adults."

HTC One unveiled: 4.7-inch 1080p display, 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600, UltraPixel camera, Android 4.1.2 with Sense 5

DNP HTC One unveiled 47inch 1080p display, 17GHz quadcore Snapdragon 600, Ultrapixels rear camera, Android 412 with Sense 5

Despite the abundant fanfare and critical acclaim, HTC's One X just couldn't quite mark the spot in 2012. No wonder, then, that the company's lopped off that extraneous letter in favor of a fresher start and renewed brand focus for its latest flagship: the One.

Gone by the wayside are those pure polycarbonate hulls -- HTC's Sense 5-laden Android Jelly Bean (4.1.2) handset comes crafted with an all-around premium look and feel, housing its 4.7-inch 1080p Super LCD 3 display (boasting 468 dpi and protected by Gorilla Glass 2) in a machined aluminum unibody. And, in a bid for the top spot on the mobile totem pole, the One also bears the distinction of being (one of) the first smartphones to feature Qualcomm's quad-core Snapdragon 600, clocked here at 1.7GHz and paired with 2GB RAM.

Gallery: HTC One

Pssst, our full hands-on can be found here.

For all its premium, metallic construction, the One cuts a relatively light figure, weighing in at 143 grams and measuring 5.4 (137.4mm) x 2.7 (68.2mm) x 0.37 (9.3mm) inches -- a thickness that puts it on par with the BlackBerry Z10. Take note, that slim silhouette accommodates for the integrated 2,300mAh Li-polymer battery, radios for WiFi a/ac/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and 32GB or 64GB of storage (sorry, there's no slot for microSD expansion).

Looking at the load of innovations HTC's crammed into the One, it's clear this is a handset for the social oversharing set. Even its front face alone tells that story. From the dual stereo speakers (featuring dedicated amps) surrounding the screen to the 2.1-megapixel camera with 88-degree wide-angle lens capable of 1080p video, to the simplified soft keys (one for back, one for home), to the IR blaster (integrated in the power button), to the default BlinkFeed homescreen (a Flipboard-like social feed); it's safe to say, the One's aggressively embracing the role of smartphone as multimedia powerhouse. And that's just what it offers head-on.

HTC's taking a risk with the One. Flip the handset around and you'll find an unassuming rear shooter in the midst of that clean aluminum body. Or, as the company calls it, the UltraPixel camera. Tackling the "myth of the megapixel," HTC's outfitted the One with a 4-megapixel BSI sensor and f/2.0 lens, such that each pixel is meant to gather 300 percent more light than the current crop of smartphone sensors. The camera unit also features optical image stabilization and HTC's ImageChip 2 for HDR, 1080p and 60fps video. But that's not the end of HTC's imaging focus. It's also introducing a new feature / service dubbed Zoe, which allows users to capture and share short videos, much like Vine, via HTC's dedicated site.

Whether or not HTC will finally strike gold with the One, only time will tell. But it's certainly not for lack of effort. This is a smartphone at the top of its class (for now, anyway); a zeitgeist-y take that should please both power and social users alike. Look for it to rollout globally this March in both HSPA and LTE models.

INTRODUCING THE NEW HTC ONE(R), A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON SMARTPHONES

HTC BlinkFeed[TM], HTC Zoe[TM] and HTC BoomSound[TM] Deliver HTC One's Unprecedented New Smartphone Experience

London and New York City, February 19, 2013 -

HTC, a global leader in mobile innovation and design, today announced its new flagship smartphone, the new HTC One. Crafted with a distinct zero-gap aluminium unibody, the new HTC One introduces HTC BlinkFeed[TM], HTC Zoe[TM] and HTC BoomSound[TM], key new HTC Sense(R) innovations that reinvent the mobile experience and set a new standard for smartphones.

"People today immerse themselves in a constant stream of updates, news and information. Although smartphones are one of the main ways we stay in touch with the people and information we care about, conventional designs have failed to keep pace with how people are actually using them," said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. "A new, exciting approach to the smartphone is needed and with the new HTC One, we have re-imagined the mobile experience from the ground up to reflect this new reality."

HTC BlinkFeed: A personal live stream right on the home screen At the centre of the new HTC One experience is HTC BlinkFeed. HTC BlinkFeed is a bold new experience that transforms the home screen into a single live stream of personally relevant information such as social updates, entertainment and lifestyle updates, news and photos with immersive images so that people no longer need to go to separate applications to find out what's happening. HTC BlinkFeed aggregates the freshest content from the most relevant and interesting sources, giving it to people at a glance, all in one place, without the need to jump between multiple applications and web sites.

To enable this new dynamic approach to the smartphone, HTC will provide both local and global content from more than 1,400 media sources with more than 10,000 articles per day from some of the most innovative media companies, such as the AOL family of media properties, ESPN, MTV, Vice Media, CoolHunting, Reuters and many others. For more information on HTC BlinkFeed's content partners, visit the HTC Blog.

HTC UltraPixel Camera with HTC Zoe
The breakthrough HTC UltraPixel Camera redefines how people capture, relive and share their most precious moments. HTC Zoe gives people the ability to shoot high-res photos that come to life in three-second snippets. These Zoes, photos and videos are then displayed in a unique way that brings the gallery to life and transforms the traditional photo gallery of still images into a motion gallery of memories. It also automatically creates integrated highlight films from each event comprised of Zoes, photos and videos set to music with professionally designed cuts, transitions and effects. These highlight videos can be remixed or set to different themes, and can be easily shared on social networks, email and other services.

To enable this innovative camera experience, HTC developed a custom camera that includes a best-in-class f/2.0 aperture lens and a breakthrough sensor with UltraPixels that gather 300 percent more light than traditional smartphone camera sensors. This new approach also delivers astounding low-light performance and a variety of other improvements to photos and videos. In addition, the perfect self-portrait or video is just a tap away with an ultra-wide angle front-facing camera which supports 1080p video capture. Multi-axis optical image stabilisation for both the front and rear cameras also helps ensure video footage smoother whether stationary or on the move. HTC UltraPixel camera adds many other features and effects such as enhanced 360' panorama, time sequencing and object removal.

HTC BoomSound
The new HTC One offers the best audio experience of any mobile phone available today. HTC BoomSound introduces for the first time on a phone, front-facing stereo speakers with a dedicated amplifier and an amazing full HD display that immerses people in music, videos, games and the YouTube[TM] clips they love. Beats[TM] Audio integration is enabled across the entire experience for rich, authentic sound whether you're listening to your favorite music, watching a YouTube video or playing a game.

HDR recording uses advanced dual microphones and audio processing to capture clean, rich sound that is worthy of high-definition video footage. Phone calls sound great on HTC One thanks to the addition of HTC Sense Voice[TM], which boosts the call volume and quality in noisy environments so that conversations come through loud and clear.

HTC Sense TV[TM]
HTC Sense TV transforms the new HTC One into an interactive program guide and remote control for most TVs, set-top boxes and receivers. Tapping the power of the cloud, Sense TV makes it simple and intuitive to see what's on and find that favourite show.

Metal Unibody Design
Wrapped in a zero-gap aluminium unibody and sporting a brilliant 4.7", Full HD (1080p) screen, the new HTC One features the latest Android Jelly Bean operating system and LTE network technology to offer blazingly-fast browsing in a package that combines premium design with breakthrough build quality.

Available in stunning silver and beautiful black, the sleek and crafted aluminium unibody sits comfortably in the hand and showcases HTC's unique antenna technology, which helps people achieve a crystal clear signal. The display also resists scratches and reduces glare, whilst offering incredible 468ppi resolution and rich, natural colours.

British author attacks "plastic" princess Kate

LONDON (Reuters) - One of Britain's most celebrated authors has launched a withering attack on Britain's Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, branding her a "shop-window mannequin" with a plastic smile whose only role in life is to breed.

In an unusually scathing public attack on a British royal, Hilary Mantel said the princess had no personality, a "perfect plastic smile" and appears to have been designed by a committee.

The writer's comments about the pregnant 31-year-old wife of second-in-line to the British throne Prince William sharply divided public opinion. Newspapers condemned Mantel's words as "venomous", "cruel" and "staggeringly rude", while supporters said it was a thoughtful analysis of the role of royal women over the centuries.

"I saw Kate becoming a jointed doll on which certain rags are hung," Mantel said in a lecture at the British Museum in London earlier this month in which she spoke about her changing views about the princess.

"She was a shop-window mannequin, with no personality of her own, entirely defined by what she wore. These days she is a mother-to-be, and draped in another set of threadbare attributions."

Mantel, who last year became the first Briton to twice win the coveted Man Booker prize for fiction, referred to the princess's severe morning sickness during the early stage of her pregnancy and said her role was to provide an heir.

"Once she gets over being sick, the press will find that she is radiant. They will find that this young woman's life until now was nothing, her only point and purpose being to give birth," Mantel said in the lecture organized by the London Review of Books on February 4. The literary magazine reprinted the lecture on its website this week.

'MACHINE-MADE'

Mantel, 60, is best known for her historical novel "Wolf Hall", about the rise of blacksmith's son Thomas Cromwell to the pinnacle of power in King Henry VIII's court. Her follow-up "Bring Up the Bodies" recounted Anne Boleyn's fall from grace.

In her lecture, Mantel said the Duchess of Cambridge was "selected for her role ... because she was irreproachable", contrasting her with the "emotional incontinence" of William's late mother, Princess Diana.

"As painfully thin as anyone could wish, without quirks, without oddities, without the risk of the emergence of character. She appears precision-made, machine-made, so different from Diana," Mantel said.

The author's agent was not immediately available for comment. A St James's Palace spokeswoman had no comment.

Reaction on Twitter suggested Mantel had split public opinion. Royal commentator Robert Jobson said the "venomous attack" was "unfair and publicity-seeking". Others agreed with Mantel, saying she had elegantly articulated what many people had long thought about the royals.

The lecture looked at the "fascination with royalty" and the "regal body", examining the lives of royal women and the importance of providing an heir. Mantel compared that to the fuss made about pandas mating in captivity.

"Our current royal family doesn't have the difficulties in breeding that pandas do, but pandas and royal persons alike are expensive to conserve and ill-adapted to any modern environment," Mantel said. "But aren't they interesting? Aren't they nice to look at?"

Gun insurance | The Salt Lake Tribune

If we were to view firearms as we do vehicles, we may be able to move forward in addressing gun-related violence.

A vehicle can be lethal. Therefore, we agree that vehicle ownership should be assigned legal accountability by requiring registration, licensure by its owner and evidence of insurance for events that cause damage to the owner and others.

Should we not adopt similar accountability for firearms? When sold, each firearm is linked to its owner by registration, regardless of how the weapon is acquired.

The owner is licensed and required to carry insurance and retains liability for the weapon until the weapon?s registration is legally transferred to another person. The insurance premium is related to the relative lethal impact and other actuarially determined factors.

While this recommendation does not replace other recommendations to minimize the risk of weapon related-catastrophes, it could augment such efforts.

Yes, illegal possession will remain a problem, as will criminal activities that result in tragedies and mayhem in our communities. Yet it may cause owners of firearms to take greater care in securing weapons from unintended access for which they are held legally liable.

Tamagotchi LIFE for Android

Virtual pet Tamagotchi LIFE has been present for the Android operating system and can be downloaded in the Android Market. Tamagotchi is virtual pet that packaged in a device similar to a small gamewatch and was popular in the 1990s era.
Now Sync Beatz brought back to the Android Tamagotchi from Bandai officially licensed. Surprisingly, the only Bandai Tamagotchi license LIFE on Sync Beatz and not develop it themselves. LIFE Tamagotchi Tamagotchi looks like in the 1990's with a fullscreen interface or display virtual Tamagotchi.

If the user selects fullscreen interface, then the Tamagotchi LIFE will fill the screen like other games. However, if the user selects LIFE on Tamagotchi virtual mode, it will display a virtual Tamagotchi oval complete with screen and buttons.

Not only that, LIFE Tamagotchi game is very similar to the original Tamagotchi that once circulated, where users can maintain digital or virtual pet animals by feeding, caring for, hingg clean the dirt from these animals.

Just like a real animal preserve, Tamagotchi LIFE also requires users to feed, clean, caring, and invite virtual pet on a regular basis in order to stay alive. Like the old Tamagotchi-efficient batteries and do not require a huge processor power, Tamagotchi LIFE is too.

?In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.? ? Benjamin Franklin

Taxes. Simply saying (or writing) ?taxes? makes me cringe. Why? Because it?s a giant pain-in-the-butt. Every year I deal with a never-ending list of forms, files, figures and fractions, but things could be much more difficult.

In fact, I have it pretty easy.

Think about it, there was a day when taxes had to be done by hand. Inventories had to be hand-written. Calculations were done with pen and paper. Oh, we?ve come so far. Thanks to technology we have the tools to take the sting out of tax preparation and financial?management.

I have here a short list of applications that can aid farmers, rancher or anybody with a small business, keep track of expenses, inventory and deductions.

Something to remember: Software is only as smart as the user. Many of these programs give the user the tools to accomplish?very specific and complicated tasks, but you must be willing to invest time into learning the program and what it?s capable of.

If you have specific questions about taxes, read the IRS?s Farmer?s Tax Guide.

Note: I?ve personally used 3 of these applications. I?ve never used QuickBooks, but the program is highly recommended by the Ohio State University Extension. Though software can help, nothing can replace a good accountant.?

Mint.com

Apparently I?m a big eater?

Mint.com, from Intuit, is a personal finance management website that integrates all of your finances in one place. I?ve been using this particular service for about 7 months now and it?s helped me to budget and save a little money.

Users can upload information for auto loans, student loans, credit cards, bank accounts, savings accounts, investments and basically anything else that impacts your finances. Mint then monitors and tracks everything.

Have a bill coming up soon? Mint sends an email to your inbox. Spent too much money on fast food this month? Mint will send a text message telling you.

Mint also offers visuals that help put things into perspective. Want to see how much you spend on groceries vs. fast food? Mint can spit out a pie chart that puts all of your expenses in one place.

Is it useful for tracking inventory? Not really. This isn?t an application designed for complicated business-type management. Though, if you?re a hobby farmer or even an avid gardener, this may come in handy.

Mint is a free service.?

Turbo Tax

This is another Intuit product. When it comes to tax time, I?ve used Turbo Tax for the last few years. Using Turbo Tax was a good decision because I received an audit notice in the mail last week. Thankfully, the service kept all of my old income tax documents in its system.

Turbo Tax is nice because the service takes users? hands and leads them through the confusing world of taxes in a way that?s easy to understand. Users can also import tax information from the previous year.

It?s also nice to see the refund calculator add up those tax deductions.

The service also allows users to e-file. I filed my taxes last night. Today I received?emails letting me know my paperwork was accepted. According to Turbo Tax, I should see a refund sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Turbo Tax offers different levels of service, giving users several?options when tax time comes. Though Turbo Tax does offer a free option, it?s limited to filing federal taxes. If you want to file your state taxes using Turbo Tax, it?ll cost you a little more money.

I filed my federal and state taxes, received my maximum refund and am having it direct-deposited into my checking account for less than $100.

QuickBooks Online

The QuickBooks name has become synonymous?with accounting and finances. Why? Because the software is robust enough for business, but simple enough for non-professional bookkeepers.

QuickBooks offers several different plans

The reason I recommend QuickBooks online rather than purchasing the software is the online version is accessible?from anywhere with internet access. If that sounds scary, don?t worry, Quickbooks is very secure.

When users purchase ?a subscription to QuickBooks Online, they also purchase access to all future upgrades to the software, customer support and the ability to share your financial data with who you choose. That ability to share your information is nice because it allows your personal accountant to keep up-to-date on your financial records.

Multiple users can use QuickBooks online at the same time. This feature can be useful for businesses that have offices located in different areas.

Mark Wilsdorf, editor of ?AgriComp Magazine, wrote a book called, ?The QuickBooks Farm Accounting Cookbook.? I recommend picking up a copy.

QuickBooks Online?is a monthly subscription-based service.?

You Need A Budget

This isn?t just another personal finance application, it?s a little bit more. The biggest difference between You Need a Budget and an app like Mint is YNAB actively tries to help you solve money problems. The program tries to promote?a philosophy as well as track your finances.

The program?s main goal is to get its users living on last month?s income.

YNAB is designed for people who are living paycheck to paycheck, are in debt or who need help saving more money each month.

Here?s the four principles of YNAB:

  1. Stop living paycheck to paycheck
  2. Give every dollar a job
  3. Save for a rainy day
  4. Roll with the punches

Unlike Mint, YNAB forces users to input transactions. This can be a turn-off for some, but YNAB is trying to promote a healthy-spending philosophy,?right?

When it comes down to making a budget, try both Mint and YNAB. Each application has its strengths and weaknesses, but YNAB does cost $60. If that?s out of your price range, I recommend using the free Mint service.

Other useful resources

If you?re looking for more resources on farm management,?The Ohio State University Extension has a great website dedicated to money, taxes and record keeping on the farm.

Ledger vs. Computerized accounting systems.

You should also subscribe to the Ohio Ag Manager Newsletter. The newsletter covers a variety of topics important to producers including financial, labor, legal, marketing and human resources issues.

The University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension is also a good resource for farmers. The extension?s website?offers easy-to-read ?how to? articles.

?

What other software do you use to manage your farm or home finances? Do you have any tips or tricks you?d like to share? Let me hear it!

Will is Farm and Dairy's newest writer. He's recently moved to Lisbon, Ohio where he lives in a church turned community theater. He enjoys writing (of course), theater and hiking.

Violence Against Women Protested By Dancers in Rome

"It's moving to see women dancing, fighting and above all sharing a positive energy against violence," said Tiziana Fornari as she danced to African beats in the shadow of the Colosseum.

In Italy in 2012, 111 women were killed -- most of them at the hands of their husbands or boyfriends.

The campaign brought hundreds of thousands of women into the streets from India to the Philippines to Australia.

Men took part in the Rome protest too like Luca Cardin, 35, who has set up an Internet side to discuss gender issues.

"My generation grew up with the television channels of (former prime minister Silvio) Berlusconi and sexist advertising. On top of that in Italy there is pressure from the family and the Catholic Church," he said.

Carma, an 81-year-old also taking part in the event, said: "Some things have changed since I was young but not everywhere, not in all social classes and not in all parts of Italy."
